Zimbabwe’s first post-independence leader, Robert Mugabe has died aged 95. Mugabe was receiving treatment in a hospital in Singapore since April before his demise.

On sit President of Zimbabwe made the announcement his passing on Twitter, writing: “It is with the utmost sadness that I announce the passing on of Zimbabwe’s founding father and former President, Cde Robert Mugabe.”

The Late Mugabe was overthrown in a military coup in 2017 after 37 years in power. His early years were applauded for increasing access to health and education for the black majority, but his later years were spotted by human rights abuses and corruption.

November 2017: Army intervenes and forces him to step down
