President of the Bulgarian Football Association, Borislav Mihaylo resigns over racists abuse of black England Players

Borislav Mihaylo, the president of the Bulgarian Football Association has resigned from his position after black England players suffered racist abuse on Monday night.

During the Euro 2020 qualifying clash, Bulgaria fans directed shameful ‘ Nazi salutes and racist chants at Three Lions players in Sofia. The match was halted on two separate occasions by UEFA officials due to abuse aimed at England players despite their 6-0 victory in Bulgaria.

Earlier today, Boyko Borisov, the prime minister of Bulgaria demanded that the country’s FA president Borislav Mihaylov steps down in the wake of racist abuse directed black England players

In the statement, it was announced that the government would freeze all relations with the Bulgarian FA – including denying them any funding until Borislav Mihaylov was gone.

And now it has been confirmed that Mihaylov has resigned from his position. A statement from the BFU read: ‘Today the Bulgarian FA president Borislav Mihaylov has resigned from his position – his letter of resignation will be presented to the members of the FA’s Executive Committee at this Friday’s meeting.

‘It comes after the pressure that has been generated over the past few days; a situation that is not positive for Bulgarian football or the Football Union itself. After so many years in the position and because of his network of international contacts, Mr Mihaylov has said he is ready to continue helping Bulgarian football to develop in any way possible
